You can make the Kramer family's favorite Dutch foods from the readers theater story, The Straw House and the Baby. Try these easy recipes for typical Dutch immigrant foods. 

Bread and Cheese

Cut slices of bread and cheese.  Butter bread and make a cheese sandwich

History: Bread was purchased at a bakery or from the baker paddler cart. Cheese was plentiful because Holland is known for its cows and milk products.

 

Potato Soup
Aardappelsoep
Cut 6 potatoes into bite size pieces
2 chopped onions
1 carrot - grated
1 stalk celery - sliced
Chicken broth (use 4 chicken bouillon cubes)
water
salt and pepper to taste

Cook in pot for 3 hours.  Add 1/2 stick of butter and 2 cups canned evaporated milk.  Simmer 1 more hour.

History: Potatoes were the main food crop in Holland. When the peat was dug the remaining soil was perfect for growing potatoes. Potatoes became an important food for poor workers. These poor workers lived in dugout sod houses in Holland.
