1. Each day have the students write 1-2 summary sentences of what has been read.
2. Construct a time line of the major events of the book.
3. Construct a KWL chart K is for what a student Knows, W is for what a student Wants to
know and L is for what a student has Learned as a result of reading.
4. Write a report on the founding of Pella or an essay based on issues presented in the book.
5. Draw illustrations for parts of the book.
6. Invite a speaker who has ties with The Netherlands (such as a college foreign exchange
student, an elderly relative of a student, etc.)
7. Post a bulletin board to go with the book. Include calendar pictures of The Netherlands, a
family tree of the Scholtes, an old and a new map of Pella, other historical clippings about Pella,
a USA map that can be used to trace the route of the Dutch settlers, a map of the Netherlands,
etc.
8. Be sure to tour Scholte House!!!
