The primary level lesson is based on the Mary Mapes Dodge story of the little Dutch boy who put his finger in the dike.
Primary Level
Goal:  Students will learn general information about the Netherlands.
Objectives:
  • Students will understand that "Holland" and "the Netherlands" are generally interchangeable terms for the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • Older primary students will be able to locate the Netherlands on a globe.
  •   Goal:  Students will learn about the importance of water in the Dutch landscape.
    Objectives:
  • Students will recognize and identify "canal", "dike" and "windmill." 
  • Students will be able to identify examples of dikes, canals, and windmills in the miniature village. 
  • Students will be able to tell why Dutch stories and pictures often involve water.
  • Goal:  Students will compare and contrast the different versions of one story.
    Objectives:
  • Students will examine illustrations to determine mood of the stories. 
  • Students will examine use of words to determine purpose of the stories.
