Combine an elementary class trip to the Miniature Village with related readings about Holland. Activities and vocabulary emphasize features common to the Dutch landscape, including dikes, canals and windmills.

This lesson will be based on versions of the Mary Mapes Dodge story of the little Dutch boy who put his finger in the dike to hold back the sea and save his community. Before coming to the Miniature Village, students will read and/or listen to different versions of this story. Details from these stories and The Cow Who Fell in the Canal will be utilized to point out the importance of water in Holland. Older primary students will also compare and contrast stories and illustrations to determine purpose and effect.
